Key interventions of SSVK in the water and sanitation sector:
1. Installation of 900 low cost sanitary toilets in Lakhnaur Block of Madhubani District Bihar (Sulabh model).

Highlights of the intervention:

• Within the limited budgetary allocation per toilet, we were exceptional in being able to provide each toilet with pre-cast roof and a door. This SSVK could manage by undertaking the production of pans itself instead of procuring it from the market thus saving on costs.
• Training of local masons in casting of roofs and production of pans
• Though constructed way back in 1993-94, most of the toilets remain functional to this day.
• The stipulated beneficiary contribution was secured for all the 900 units built.
  
• Awareness campaigns for promotion of appropriate sanitary practices and development of IEC material for the same.

Installation of around 800 PH VI in the villages of Rohtas, Darbhanga and Madhubani districts of Bihar and 100 India Mark II hand pumps in East Singhbhum and Palamu districts of Jharkhand.

Highlights of the intervention:

• The hand pumps were located within the most deprived sections of village settlements.
• Within these sections the exact location was determined through community participation with participation of women at a minimum of 70%.
• Each hand pump was provided with a cemented platform with provision of appropriate drainage of water.
• In order to maintain transparency the name of the concerned donor was etched on each platform
• Formation of village level committees for the maintenance and repair of he installed hand pumps
• Training of local mechanics in repair of hand pumps and provision of tool kit to each
• Awareness campaign around safe drinking water practices carried out and IEC material developed for the same.
• Special campaigns carried out in accordance with the seasonality of diseases in the area.
• In Rohtas the installation was preceded by a detailed survey to assess the status and quality of the ground water.
